Some more of Melody dahlias

Another pot variety that I liked very much was Melody Gipsy. Flower heads of bright pink color with yellowish center, pretty large for low growing dahlia, were placed on very high strong stems. It could make a nice cutting variety if it would be more floriferous. I should let it grow in 3 stalks instead of one next summer.

Еще одни сорт низкорослых георгин порадовал меня в прошлом году - Melody Gipsy. Соцветия светло-розовые с желтой серединкой сравнительно крупные для столь невысокого растения располагались на длинных сильных цветоносах высоко над листвой. Сорт можно было бы назвать срезочным, если б он цвел обильнее. В этом сезоне буду растить его в три стебля вместо одного, может будет погуще.

Melody Gipsy

Of course I grew the famous Melody Harmony. Nowadays varieties with dark leaves are very popular. Melody Harmony is a nice example of that kind of dahlias since its pale lilac flower heads are contrasting well with very dark purple green leaves. It developed thick bush but flowers had very short stems and were slightly hiding among leaves. So there is still need for breeding more perfect dark leave low growing double dahlia...

Вырастила я и знаменитую Melody Harmony. Сейчас очень популярны сорта с темной листвой и Melody Harmony - хороший пример такого сорта. Светло-сиреневые соцветия ярко выделяются на фоне свекольно-зеленой листвы. Куст был мощным, густо-облиственным, но цветоносы короткими, отчего соцветия немного прятались среди листвы. Так что в селекции темно-листных низкорослых махровых сортов еще есть к чему стремиться...

Melody Harmony

Melody Latin was flowering with very bright yellow flowers on long stems. For some reason earwigs liked its flowers also so there were not many uneaten flowers left. I should let this variety to grow in 3 stalks to get thicker bush. The color in the pictures is a bit pinkish due to evening sunlight, otherwise flowers were pure yellow.

Ярко-жёлтыми соцветиями на длинных цветоносах цвел Melody Latin. Уховертки ели его нещадно, так что почти не осталось необъеденных цветков. В следующем сезоне кустик надо будет вести в 3 стебля, чтоб был погуще. На фото цветки выглядят розоватыми из-за вечернего солнца, на самом деле цвет чисто-жёлтый.

Some of my pot dahlias

Last year I have planted some low growing varieties in large pots to have them on the terrace. All of them were flowering but not all were equally decorative if judge the whole plant. The most impressive was Melody Dora. This plant was growing fast and developed a nice symmetrical bush of about 60 cm height. I let it grow in one stalk and still it looked very thick and was covered with flowers since mid-June.

В прошлом году я посадила на террасе несколько сортов контейнерных низкорослых георгин в большие горшки. Все они цвели, но не все оказались одинаково декоративны. Наилучшее впечатление произвёл Melody Dora. Компактный куст симметричной формы высотой около 60 см. Хотя я вырастила его в один стебель, куст все равно выглядел очень пушистым. Обильно цвел над листвой с середины июня.

My second favourite was Melody Mambo. The single stalk that I left from the beginning got broken at the base but there were 3 more quickly growing instead. The bush was covered with many nicely shaped medium sized flowers of very deep red colour. Another good thing about this variety was that earwigs didn't like to eat its flowers as much as they did others.

Вторым в списке понравившихся мне сортов идет Melody Mambo. Несмотря на то, что единственный стебель, едва успев заложить бутоны, был сломан ветром у самого основания, куст быстро восстановился за счет трёх новых стеблей и зацвел ненамного позже остальных. Цвёл обильно среднего размера соцветиями бархатного красного цвета. Следует также отметить, что цветки этого сорта почти не поедались уховёртками, так полюбившими другие георгины.

Melody Dixie developed a nice bush but not as thick as did Melody Dora. And flowering was also a bit less. Nicely shaped flower heads were raised above foliage and had very nice soft colours.

Куст сорта Melody Dixie не выглядел таким мощным и пушистым как у Melody Dora. И цвел чуть менее обильно. Соцветия хорошей формы располагались высоко над листвой. Переливающийся жемчужно-сиреневый цвет.

Fog on the frozen lake

In the morning the view from our windows was especially beautiful and mysterious. The lake was hidden under cover of frozen fog. The opposite shore has disappeared. Björn made a video to memorize this fantastic view.

Сегодня рано утром вид из нашего окна был особенно великолепен. Замёрзшее озеро было укутано туманом так, что противополжного берега совсем не было видно. Бьёрн конечно поспешил увековечить эту красоту.

Finally!

Finally CONSERVATOIRE DE LA SOCIÉTÉ FRANÇAISE DU DAHLIA À FLAMANVILLE published their new catalog for 2011. But look how much less varieties they have on the list! They lost a lot of tubers when it was freezing in Flamanville during the digging time in November. What a pity! Of course, I couldn't resist to not to order several tubers from them. On photos they look gorgeous, we'll see if I would manage to get them to flower in my garden...

Наконец-то долгожданный каталог Французского общества любителей георгин за 2011 год стал доступен. Но количество предлагаемых сортов заметно меньше, чем в предыдущие годы. У них погибло много сортов, когда во время выкопки клубней во Фламанвилле ударил мороз и выпал снег. Как жаль! Я конечно не удержалась, чтобы не заказать несколько новых сортов для коллекции. На фотографиях они выглядят великолепно, посмотрим, смогу ли я увидеть их цветение вживую в своем саду.

What else to do on cold winter Sunday evening if not browse a nice book by the glowing fireplace? And of course I mean a garden book. Our garden library is not very big, I would rather say it's small, just 4 books. We acquired them during last year which became our first year in the garden. And of course all these books are about our favourite plants - hostas, dahlias and Japanese maples.
There are several must have books on hostas out there and I have 2 of them. 'The New Encyclopedia of Hostas' by Diana Grenfell and Mike Shadrack and 'The Book of Little Hostas: 200 Mini, Small and Very Small Varieties' by Mike Shadrack and Kathy Guest Shadrack. Both are great source of high quality pictures and information on many hosta varieties.
As for dahlias I have only one book. It was recommended to me by my friend Nadezhda. It's a book written by Michele Robert, former president of French Dahlia Society. It's called 'Le monde des dahlias', yes it's in French, so I mostly enjoying great pictures in it :).
And the forth book is 'Japanese Maples: The Complete Guide to Selection and Cultivation' by J.D. Vertrees and Peter Gregory. Maples is not exactly my thing, but we got several very cute varieties out there waiting for the spring.

Морозный зимний воскресный вечер, поленья потрескивают в камине, хорошая книга на коленях - что может быть приятнее? Конечно, книга должна быть о садовых растениях :). За прошедший год у нас подобралась небольшая библиотека из 4-х книг о наших любимых садовых растениях, хостах, георгинах и японских клёнах.
Из нескольких хостовых книг, которые должен иметь каждый хостовод, у меня есть две. 'The New Encyclopedia of Hostas' Дианы Гринфель и Майка Шадрака и 'The Book of Little Hostas: 200 Mini, Small and Very Small Varieties' написанная четой Шадрак. Обе книги являются прекрасным источником великолепных фотографий и информации о многих сортах хост.
О георгинах у меня есть только одна книга. Её рекомендовала мне моя подруга Надежда. Книга написана Мишелем Робером, теперь уже бывшим председателем Французского Георгинового Общества. Книга называется 'Le monde des dahlias' или, по-русски, Мир георгин. Книга на французском языке, и я конечно в основном наслаждаюсь фотографиями прекрасных цветов :).
Четвёртая книга - 'Japanese Maples: The Complete Guide to Selection and Cultivation' J.D. Vertrees и Peter Gregory. Японские клёны не совсем мои растения, тем не менее несколько симпатичных сортов дожидаются весны в нашем саду.

Cold...

This night was the coldest night of the winter so far -24°C. I brought up the rest of my dahlia tubers from the basement, they might freeze there. Some of them were up already last week and are waking up now. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I can take first cuttings. Among those that are already awake are Vicki and Hapet Red King that I bought from Peter

Прошедшая ночь была самой холодной ночью этой зимы, пока, по крайней мере; на нашем градуснике было -24°C. Конечно, я сразу притащила коробки с оставшимися в подвале деленками георгин, чтобы они там не померзли. Из тех, что я поставила на проращивание в прошлые выходные несколько клубней уже проснулись, так что через пару недель начну своё первое черенкование. Приятно, что благополучно проснулись клубни, приобретенные осенью у Петера, например, Vicki и Hapet Red King.

В такой мороз в птичьей кормушке на нашей террасе всегда полно гостей. А как-то раз к нам заглянула белочка.

First lost tubers...

On Sunday I looked through some of my dahlia tubers purchased from Austrian dahlia breeder Peter Haslhofer in fall. Most of them survived the storage perfectly fine with one exception. The tuber of Hapet Perfect got rotten. It's a great pity since I liked this variety very much from the photos as well as from reviews of my friend Nadezhda.

В прошедшее воскресенье я просматривала клубни приобретенные осенью у Петера Хаслхофера. Почти все они благополучно пережили зимнее хранение за одним печальным исключением. Клубенёк сорта Hapet Perfect полностью сгнил. К моему большому сожалению. Сорт мне очень понравился на фото и по отзывам Надежды Куксенко

On the weekend I got some new additions to my dahlia collection. Looking very much forward to see all my precious dahlias in blooming...

Swedish variety that I hopefully will get in my collection. The breeder herself Marie from Tierp promised me a tuber of Birka Eva. Isn't it a true beauty?
